If you’re looking for style inspiration Pinterest is the place to get it in my opinion. I like Pinterest because there are many different styles to be found, at different price points, with different people’s interpretations to learn from.
Learning from others is a really really cool thing, but what would be really great is for you to create something totally unique to you. These fives steps will lead you to a style that is all your own using style inspiration from others.
First, create four boards:
1. inspirational visuals
{This board will be filled with visual representations of absolutely anything that makes you feel happy or grateful or joyful when you see it. My Pinterest board like this is called Magical and it is filled with visuals that speak to my soul. I think this is the most important Pinterest board you can make and is a wonderful way to start feeling inspired visually.}
2. inspirational words
{This board is similar to above, but all words. Choose words, sayings, quotes that move you.}
3. style board
{I have many many many of these boards, but one main style inspiration board could suit you perfectly. Or you could divide by lifestyle like professional, business casual, smart casual, casual and party. If you decide to divide by lifestyle you’ll want to steps three to five for each one.}
4. seasonal planning board
{You’ll use this to plan out your wardrobe for the season. I do this privately, and you can too by creating a private Pinterest board. This option can be found at the bottom of your personal board screen (the view that shows you all the boards you’ve personally created).}
Second, search for soul-full inspiration:
I recommend beginning your style inspiration journey by pinning magical visuals and inspiring words that have absolutely nothing to do with style to the first two Pinterest boards you created. I want you to get the feel for finding visuals that truly inspire you without a care for what others might think. You’ll be surprised how much these two boards can ultimately become your style inspiration. If you haven’t yet found many people to follow, I often find things I love in the popular feed, photography feed, or by searching things that draw me in like inspirational quotes or trees. Find a good number of pins. The exact number doesn’t really matter as long as there’s a group that feels good to you. Take a peak at these first two boards you’ve created as a whole and feel how it feels to be truly inspired by a beauty you’ve designed. These two boards you’ve created are totally unique to you. They are your style.
Third, find that same feeling with style inspiration:
Once you know that inspired feeling, start to look for style visuals that give you that same deep down satisfaction. That feeling of joy or connection that you got when you pinned your magical visuals and inspiring words. Forget about whether the style will suit you or not… it. does. not. matter. This is all about style inspiration, so if you love it Pin It! You’ll need at least thirty pins on your style board in order to complete the next step—more is better!—so keep on pinning to your heart’s content. Once your done look over your creation. You’ve created another thing totally unique to you—your style.
Four, find the pattern:
This is the key piece. You need to be able to look at your style inspirations and discern what it is exactly that you are drawn to. For example I tend to be drawn to a-line skirts, bright colours, and funky accessories. After doing a similar exercise, one of my clients was surprised to find she had many pins of leather leggings—not her usual thing! You may too be surprised at the patterns that emerge, but try to keep an open mind. (Finding these patterns is something I do for all my clients when we work together.) Please please please don’t try to find the patterns while you’re creating your board. The board needs to be created with an open mind and heart in order to be a true reflection of you. Once you’ve found three patterns hand write them on a piece of paper or your journal or a post-it so you can remind yourself when you need to.
Five, create your seasonal board:
Your private seasonal board is by far the most heady. You still want to feel your style inspiration here but you will also want to make sure the pieces you pin are also those you need and hopefully they also fulfill one of the three patterns you identified above. You want to use this board to pin style inspiration of individual pieces that you can afford to buy and are easy to purchase. You’ll likely need to venture off Pinterest for this and onto retail sites that sell items you like (or think you might like). If you identified a pattern above that kind of shocked you, make sure this private board has a couple of these options you can try in real life. You may be onto something that will flip your current style on it’s head and make you feel a whole lot more like your unique self. Also, don’t be afraid to put pieces on here that weren’t originally on your list. If you’re newly inspired during your search, awesome!
